Vehicles – Municipal

SPECIALIST FIRE APPLIANCES FOR MUNICIPAL PROTECTION

The ever increasing expansion of urban areas and the subsequent raise in fire risks, have led BAI to develop a range of fire vehicles and appliances which fully meet  the requirements from municipal firefighting services.

BAI Municipal firefighting vehicles can fire fight either in areas of difficult access (where reduced dimensions are required such as in historical centres, high traffic zones, mountainous areas) or in places where the firefighting intervention requires water and/or foam of superior capacities.

BAI water tender vehicles offer a wide range of equipment options in order to be ideally suited to each customer particular requirement. Specialist fire appliances with the primary purpose of transporting large amounts of water to the fireground, especially where fire hydrants are not readily avalaible.

Our BAIWAY firefighting superstructures, which we distinguish into two macro-categories (Fire Rescue Pumper & Fire Pumper Tanker), can be realised according to customer’s request on the best suitable chassis.

Vehicles – Industrial protection

INDUSTRIAL PROTECTION – FOAM & POWDER VEHICLES for INDUSTRIAL FIRE BRIGADES

The main task of BAI industrial firefighting vehicles is to counteract the specific dangers arising from areas having high risk of fire such as petrochemical industries, power and nuclear plants, ports.

The diversity and the concentration of the risks within the industrial sector, have necessitated the development of vehicles using all types of extinguishing agents: water, foam and powder.

The complete range of appliances provided by our Company allows the industrial operators to select the most suitable vehicle according their specific requirements.

Vehicles – Hydraulic Platforms

HYDRAULIC PLATFORMS FOR ELEVATED RESCUE

A Hydraulic Platform (HP) is a large fire appliance used mainly to efficiently rescue from high rise tower blocks and other tall buildings. It is essentially a large crane fitted with a caged platform which can be hoisted to heights well over 30 metres in some cases.

The platform is raised to windows or balconies to rescue stranded persons. The appliance is also capable of pumping water and as such occasionally these units are also used to direct hose reel water jets into a fire from an elevated position.

BAI VPI Hydraulic Platforms range includes firefighting and rescue platforms from 18 to 54 m working height, complete with high technology for electronics, checking and mixing devices.

Vehicles – Rescue

TECHNICAL RESCUE OPERATIONS

BAI VP Rescue trucks are multi-purpose vehicles primarly designed for technical rescue situations such as car accidents, rope rescues, swiftwater rescues or building collapses. Technical rescue refers therefore to those aspects of saving life or property that employ the use of tools and skills that exceed those normally reserved for fire fighting, medical emergency, and rescue.

Special attention is given to the equipment disposition inside the superstructure as it is determining for the rapidity and efficiency of the intervention. BAI  Rescue vehicles are produced only after a careful technical evaluation, a choice of materials and after an accurate selection of top quality equipments.

Vehicles – Forest protection

FOREST and RURAL PROTECTION: WILDLAND FIRE APPLIANCES

Wildlands firefighting requires unique vehicles that can climb mountain roads and hills, be self-reliant an have high clearances for wheels and suspension. Wildland fire apparatus may have lower capacities to carry water but can be deployed to fight fires in environments whre urban fire trucks would be unable to operate due to rugged terrain.

The need for top off-road performance, manoeuvrability, ability to climb, small dimensions and low weight, rule out the carrying of large amounts of extinguishing agents.

High, or extra high-pressure systems assure an outstanding extinguishing capacity, the maximum throw distances as well as an optimum use of water.

Special Firefighting Vehicles

Vehicle – Tunnel Rescue

PROTEUS: New Tunnel Rescue Vehicle

BAI develops, potentiates and consolidates previous BAI Janus tunnel rescue vehicle expertise for firefighting interventions in tunnels and releases NEW BAI PROTEUS tunnel firefighting vehicle. BAI PROTEUS VSAT 13000 S includes top quality fire fighting technology and is specially designed for firefighting operations in high temperatures, isolated and low visibility tunnel environments. BAI PROTEUS tunnel rescue vehicle enables a quick and massive fire attack in tunnels and reduced space environments.

JANUS «two-faces» truck for tunnel fires. Absolute «World-Premiere»
The project for the construction of JANUS tunnel vehicle comes as a result of the serious incident occurred in 1999 in the Mont Blanc Tunnel. After this event, the Italian-French company EEIG-TMB (European Economic Group f
or the Interest of the Mont Blanc Tunnel) established a committee for carrying out a Plan to ensure 24 hours of prevention, safety and immediate action services for people and traffic in the tunnel. The action plan provided, among other things, the presence of three emergency locations permanently manned by Fire professionals.

BAI response to this project is a highly  innovative solution and that is JANUS vehicle. Like Janus, the ancient god with two faces, the vehicle engineered by BAI to firefight in the tunnel has two faces: this means two twin cabins with two-way ride able to manoeuvre in tight spaces, reverse gear without manoeuvre and move laterally.

JANUS tunnel rescue vehicle is build on MAN chassis and presents unique rescue capacities of its kind. The vehicle is equipped with two twin cabins as well as with four-wheel steering; a 4000 litres water tanker and 500 litres of foam. Provided also with infrared cameras which allow easy driving in case of darkness and smoke, with breathing apparatus and self-protection systems both for the cabins and wheels. Both cabins are pressurized.

Vehicle – Rail-Road Rescue

BAI “VAB” Rail-Road fire fighting vehicle allows the use both on rail and road. The vehicle to move by rail has two axles with wheels and rails with suitable gauge. The traction force for the movement by rail is supplied by the vehicle’s axle motor by means of friction drums of adequate diameter placed next to the driving wheels. The lowering and lifting of the rail routes is made through hydraulic cylinders where is located an emergency device for the lifting of the rail routes in case of breakdowns.

The BAI rail traction solution envisages a change of speed, mechanic with electronic control and automated clutch device. Is also provided a speed limiter for driving wheels.

The retarder incorporates the specific braking system. The vehicle is capable of two-way running with similar performance in both directions. It is guaranteed a maximum train speed of 40 Km/h.

The placement of the vehicle on the track is fast and made easy thanks to the adoption of lighting devices suitably directed to railways and to the underlying area, in order to ease the view of the support team during the manoeuvre operations.

There are red and white lighting devices for the rail movement both on the front and on the rear side. Moreover, there is a sound indicator of appropriate intensity as for the reverse movements. The rail braking system, which is independent from the road one, provides pneumatic front and rear brakes. The drive is effected by a lever mounted in the cabin next to the gear selector of the vehicle, in a readily accessible position both for driver and co-driver(s). The rail braking system can be turned off, even during rail driving, when you need to use the vehicle’s brakes.

Breathing Apparatus Tender

BAI Breathing Apparatus vehicles (BaTs) carry extensive stocks of spare Breathing Apparatus cylinders at large incidents.

They replenish cylinders which may have been used by firefighters tackling a protracted blaze or dealing with Hazardous Materials. Some  Breathing Apparatus Tenders are also fitted with compressors which allow empty BA cylinders to be recharged on scene.

Most also contain a mobile workshop so that BA sets can be repaired at the scene of incident so that they can be made available for use again at the incident within in a very short space of time.

Command Control Unit

At large protracted incidents BAI Command Unit (CU) vehicle is normally deployed to the scene as main communication centre for Senior Commanders to monitor and co-ordinate resources.

Essentially a command unit is a command centre, telecommunications hub and office on wheels employed for emergencies control.

Hazmat Vehicle

Many fire departments covering large metropolitan areas or those containing many high-risk hazards, keep specialist appliances for dealing with hazardous materials.

Hazardous materials or «HazMats», are solids, liquids, or gases that can harm people, other living organisms, property, or the environment. They are often subjected to chemical regulations. Dangerous goods include materials that are radioactive, flammable, explosive or corrosive, oxidizers or asphyxiants, biohazardous, toxic, pathogen or allergen substances and organisms, but also physical condititions as compressed gases and liquids or hot materia, including all goods containing such materials or chemicals, or may have other characteristics that render it hazardous in specific circumstances.

Hazardous Materials Appliances are of two main types:

  1. Decontamination Unit carry specialised equipment capable of decontaminating emergency workers and / or victims whom have come into contact with hazardous materials. The equipment carried is wide ranging and highly technical in nature.
  2. Scientific Support Unit, essentially a mobile laboratory which can attend a wide range of incidents (including chemical spills and fires) where early on-site scientific analysis  and monitoring will speed up the detection process and allow firefighters and other emergency services to provide the correct response for the particular incident.
